The Mothers’ Union has more than four million members in 84 countries around the world. It was founded in England in 1876 by Mary Sumner and membership rapidly spread throughout the UK and abroad. In Southwark, our members volunteer and pray for a variety of projects that reflect our aim and objects. We also raise funds for our worldwide projects.

The Mothers’ Union promotes the well-being of families worldwide by:

  • developing prayer and spiritual growth in families
  • studying and reflecting on family life and marriage and its place in society
  • resourcing our members to take practical action to improve conditions for families, both nationally and in communities in which they live.

Membership options

Membership of the Mothers’ Union is open to all who have been baptised, affirm their belief in the aim and objects of the Mothers’ Union and pay a subscription to Mothers’ Union funds.

Branch membership is currently the most common form of membership. Branches are usually (though not always) attached to an Anglican church in the Diocese. Southwark currently has around 85 branches (for details of your nearest branch, please contact the Diocesan Secretary, details listed in the Contacts section below).

Branches offer fellowship, organise meetings, events and fundraising and decide on how they can best offer their membership of the Mothers’ Union to their own communities. Attendance of branch meetings, however, is not a condition of membership.

Alternative forms of membership in Southwark are available including Diocesan, Deanery and Indoor membership. For details, contact the Diocesan Secretary.

Publications

Connected

Mothers’ Union’s new membership magazine Connected came out at the beginning of April 2021. The driving force behind the new publication was a need to keep members in Britain and Ireland ‘connected’ by ensuring they were informed and up-to-date on the wider movement.

This includes a mix of news about our work worldwide and in the UK and Ireland, faith-based articles, news about policy and advocacy, info on upcoming events, appeals and fundraising.

Inserts, including the Praying With Purpose supplement, are included for members who don’t have access to the internet.
