The Diocesan Dean and Area Advisers in Women’s Ministry seek to support women in key ways by:

  • advocating for women in ministry so that policy and practice is changed to include and affirm them more fairly
  • affirming women in ministry through guidance, training and administration of the Gilmore Fund (more information can be found on the Fund below)
  • assessing the Diocese’s progress through regular monitoring of statistics such as the proportion of Incumbents, or those recommended for ordination training, who are female.

Gilmore Fund

Isabella Gilmore was the sister of William Morris who did great works of social care in South London as a Deaconess (from 1887) and trained other women to do the same.

The Gilmore Fund is a legacy left to the Diocese from the sale of her training house. Today, women in ordained and lay ministries in Southwark Diocese can apply to the Fund for grants towards their personal and professional development.
