Appoint a Gift Aid Secretary

Collating declarations and processing your Gift Aid claims can be a big task, so it is wise to appoint a volunteer to be responsible for this task.

Choose your online and contactless giving providers wisely

Many online and contactless giving platforms can collect and report Gift Aid declarations for you, making your claim much simpler. Donations of up to £30 given by contactless or Chip and PIN in your church qualify for the Gift Aid Small Donation Scheme (GASDS).

Ensure declarations are up to date

A donor can make a Gift Aid declaration for a one-off gift or for regular giving for up to 4 years. In 2016, the requirements for declarations changed. It is now the donor’s responsibility to pay any difference between the amount claimed in Gift Aid for all charities to which they have donated in a tax year and the amount paid in Income tax or Capital Gains tax.

Model Gift Aid Declarations, which you can personalise for your church, are available for single donations and multiple donations.

Write to your planned givers every year

It is important to be in regular contact with your planned givers. Thanking them, can also be an opportunity to ask those who are not giving through Gift Aid to check whether they are eligible, and if so, whether they would consider giving through Gift Aid.

Join the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS)

This scheme claims Gift Aid on behalf of your church monthly, improving your cash flow and reducing your work. Find out more about PGS on our website.

Claim on a regular basis

You can help your church’s cash flow by claiming quarterly or even monthly. If you’re struggling with the online process, please ask us for help.
