Thanks to a CYP grant, St Matthew’s Redhill has taken a meaningful step towards inclusion by ensuring that children and young people with additional needs, along with their families, feel fully included in the main church services. The goal was to create a welcoming and comfortable area not just for existing families but also for those who may now feel more able to attend on Sundays.
With the grant, the church has created a nurturing and supportive environment that makes participation easier and more comfortable for all. Additions include:
- Storage units and boxes to keep everything organized
- Wobble cushions for sensory focus
- Voice recording buttons to help nonverbal children join in with phrases like “Amen” and “Thanks be to God”
- Books on additional needs to promote awareness and understanding
- Fidget tools for sensory engagement
- Ear defenders for those sensitive to noise
- Overlays for children and adults with dyslexia
This transformation was a collaborative effort, with families, SEND professionals, teachers, and an occupational therapist all contributing to designing the space.
The impact of this initiative has extended beyond the young people it was designed for. It has also deepened the congregation’s understanding of the diverse needs within the community. The response has been overwhelmingly positive:
“This is such a lovely addition! My two have been loving it! It really helps, thank you for being so inclusive!”
“Great to see you welcoming all members of the community; thank you so much for all your support.”
“We ABSOLUTELY LOVE this!!! What an incredible church you are!! Inclusive & accepting… Wonderful!”
“I love this. It will also come in handy when the school visits with SEND children.” Teacher at St Matthew’s School
“This looks brilliant and something we would use when we visit! Thank you.”
