LONDONERS ARE TO COME TOGETHER AT PRAYER VIGIL TO PRAY FOR SUCCESS OF COP26

The COP26 conference of world leaders in Glasgow is just over a couple of weeks away and Londoners of all faiths are being invited by South London churches, and the Diocese of Southwark, to a Prayer Vigil at Southwark Cathedral for the success of COP26.

The Vigil, which takes place on October 23, between 2pm and 3:45pm, is being organised by the Revd Canon Giles Goddard, Vicar of St John’s Waterloo and founder and chair of Faith for the Climate. “We’ve planned the Vigil for COP because we’re facing a global climate crisis. The gathering of world leaders in Glasgow offers a chance to change course and reverse the potential for catastrophic climate change. The vigil will be a chance for Londoners to come together and pray for a successful conference,” he said.

Prayer stations will be placed around the cathedral, giving people the opportunity to reflect, meditate and offer up their own personal prayers. They include: Letters for Creation – Christian Aid, Healing the Land, Restoring People – A Rocha, Voices from the Global South – CAFOD, Chants and Chimes – Iona Community, Guided Meditations – Spiritual Directors, Eco Spirituality – Mike Mullins and Praying for the four ‘R’s Creatively – St Mary’s Eco Church.

“We are encouraging people to make a pilgrimage from their place of worship on foot, by bike on public transport or whatever mode they wish,” said Giles. Children and young people have been invited to bring a Letter for Creation.

The Bishop of Croydon, The Rt Revd Jonathan Clark, and the Archdeacon of Croydon, the Ven. Dr Rosemarie Mallett, plan to walk from Croydon to Southwark Cathedral for the vigil. “As we make our pilgrimage from Croydon to Southwark Cathedral, I will be reflecting on the importance of repairing and rebuilding, replanting and growing, rather than continuing to plunder the resources of the world, human and environmental,” said Bishop Jonathan.

The vigil will also be livestreamed, starting at 3:10pm. Watch the service online here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCal1PTQIUohMqybIc9Lipkw/live
