The Church is called to reflect the beauty and diversity of God’s creation. Disabled and neurodivergent people are not simply welcome in our churches; they are an essential part of the Body of Christ, bringing unique gifts, insights, and experiences that enrich our communities.
Yet many people still encounter barriers to full participation in church life. Accessibility is about more than buildings and facilities. It is about creating communities where everyone feels valued, included, and able to contribute. True belonging means recognising that every person is made in the image of God and has a place in the life, worship, and mission of the Church.
When churches become places where disabled and neurodivergent people can flourish, the whole church flourishes. We all benefit from communities that embrace different ways of thinking, communicating, worshipping, and engaging with the world.
To support this vision, the Diocese of Southwark is launching a pilot partnership with the charity Growing Hope. Through specialist training, accessibility audits, and an accessibility awards programme, churches will be equipped to identify and remove barriers, strengthen inclusion, and develop welcoming environments for all.
This partnership is about more than meeting standards. It is about fostering a culture of belonging, listening to lived experience, and recognising the gifts that disabled and neurodivergent people bring to our churches.
Together, we can build communities where everyone is welcomed, everyone is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to flourish in faith and fellowship.
