Ordained Pioneers are an important part of the mix in the strategy of the Diocese of Southwark. As we reimagine ministry and seek to reach out in new ways to those around us, we recognise the need for those who have a particular call to pioneering and forming new ecclesial (church) communities.

Each year we look to appoint at least two Pioneer curates who are attached to churches and Incumbents in the Diocese where we believe that Pioneers can gain experience to grow new ecclesial communities. These Pioneer curates have some additional training and time for reflection on their ministry during their curacy. We also look to help them as they seek to form a new Fresh Expression of Church (fxC).

In addition to Pioneer curates, we are also looking to appoint more mixed-mode Pioneer clergy who will be involved in leading a parish whilst being given space to start one or more fxCs. We sometimes also have opportunities for Pioneer ministers in particular places to help reach a new group of people.

We don’t have a separate pathway for pioneer ministry, as we wish to ensure that our ordinands can also lead a parish, but if you are interested in pioneering we suggest that you take opportunities in training to experience fxCs and pioneering. You should also ensure that the Diocesan Director or Ordinands and the Diocesan Director of Pioneering are made aware of your interest (contact details for both are below).
