Creationtide or the ‘Season of Creation’ is the period in the annual church calendar, from 1st September to 4th October, dedicated to God as the Creator and Sustainer of all life. It is a time to celebrate the gift of creation and renew our commitment to care for God’s planet, through prayer, worship, and practical action.

This year’s theme is ‘Living Water’, based on the vision from Ezekiel 47:1-12. God’s life-giving water flows from the temple of God, restoring a desolate place, reviving waters, and bringing transformation.

How can we get involved?

Churches can get involved with the Season of Creation in many ways. For many this includes hosting special services focused on creation care. Churches might use special prayers, worship outside, host an event or take some form of practical action for the environment.

This year there are exciting new developments, including the ‘Hope for All Creation’ theological document recently adopted by the House of Bishops, and liturgical resources for the new ‘Feast of Creation in Christ’.

There is something for everyone – and a range of resources to help you plan below.

Worship & Teaching

  • An ecumenical celebration guide is available on the Season of Creation
  • Hope for All Creation, a landmark teaching document produced by the Faith and Order Commission, was recently adopted by the House of Bishops. A copy can be purchased from Church House Publishing, or a free digital copy is available for download. Resources to support engagement with Hope for All Creation and webinars exploring its themes can be found here.
  • Preaching for God’s World provide weekly thoughts and reflections on each Sunday’s set lectionary readings from the perspective of creation care and environmental justice.
  • The Church of England have a range of liturgical resources for Creationtide.
  • A Time for Creation, by Church House Publishing, brings together the Common Worship liturgical resources for creation and the environment. These service resources can be used at any time of the year.
  • Eco Congregation Scotland have put together a series of helpful resources for each week of the season, including videos.
  • Some time ago, Bishop Christopher commissioned a series of Propers for Creationtide.
  • Choose Life! This e-book by Diane Craven and Revd Johannes Nobel (Diocese of York) contains prayer and worship suggestions combined with practical actions for creation for each liturgical season (Creationtide pp.166 – 184).
  • A Rocha UK, who run Eco Church, have a webpage with Worship and Teaching resources. They also have Green Communion resources.

Feast of Creation in Christ

  • A new ecumenical feast day, ‘Feast of Creation in Christ’ has recently been approved by General Synod. This is to be celebrated on the first Sunday of September. More information can be found here and the approved liturgy downloaded here.

  • A Rocha have produced a number of prayers for Creationtide, among other resources.
  • Green Christian provide daily prayers for creation, released monthly in their prayer guide.

Music & Hymns

Training

  • Caring for God’s Creation: Faithful Living in a Changing World – We are running a cross-diocesan Creationtide offering this year with the Diocese of London. Over a series of three evenings at 7-9pm on Zoom, we’ll explore what faithful discipleship looks like in a changing world and what it means to care for God’s creation as Christians today. This course will be particularly valuable for parish Eco Reps, teams, church leaders, or anyone seeking to develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues from a Christian perspective, as well as grow in confidence in taking practical action within their church and community.   • Foundations for Creation Care – our foundational, 1.5 hour creation care offering will take place on Thurs 24th September 6:30-8pm on Zoom. This training is ideal for those wanting to get started with eco work in their church, or looking to reignite their journey. Find out more and sign up here.
  • Lausanne Global Classroom have a training series on creation care, with individual videos that can also be watched on YouTube.
  • The Church of England have a series of environment webinars you can watch on demand – on topics such as solar panels, heat pumps, fundraising and Eco Church.

Practical Activities

  • Join thousands of churches nationwide in becoming an Eco Church. The useful framework from A Rocha UK supports churches in considering how to care for God’s world in all areas of church life, with a huge range of resources to support.
  • Support one of the 25 identified species by A Rocha’s Target 25. The project focuses on threatened species and habitats in the UK which we can support through use of church outdoor space and monitoring.
  • If you’re looking for budget-friendly actions for yourself or to share with your church, our Caring for Creation on a Budget resource includes 15 low-cost and no-cost ways to care for the planet.
  • Host a Peoples Emergency Briefing Screening. This 50-minute film features expert briefings from the Westminster National Emergency Briefing last year, on the latest insights on the environmental crises and their impact on different areas of society. Dedicated church resources with practical guidance and support have been produced.

Small Group Materials

  • Saying Yes to Life by Ruth Valerio was the Archbishop of Canterbury’s 2020 Lent Book. Rooted in the themes of Genesis 1, the book connects the biblical story of creation with urgent global issues such as climate justice, ethical living, and social concern. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and prayer to aid thoughtful reflection.
  • Plenty! is a small group discussion resource developed as part of Green Christian’s Joy in Enough They offer training for those wishing to facilitate this course.

Harvest

  • The Church of England have thanksgiving and intercessions documents for Harvest.
  • Green Christian have produced some Harvest resources, including orders of service, suggested music, a children’s talk, and more.
  • USPG’s 2026 Harvest Appeal resources, focused on environmental stewardship and young people’s responses to the climate crisis, will be available from the end of July at uspg.org.uk. The free, downloadable resources include a short animated film, crafts, and reproducible worksheets for primary-aged children in churches and schools.

Outdoor Worship

  • The Church of England has useful guidance on outdoor worship – produced in the COVID-19 pandemic, but still relevant.
  • The Faraday Institute provide a comprehensive resource page on outdoor worship.
  • Roots ecumenical partnership have a useful information document on creating a ‘Forest Church’ style outdoor act of worship – also created during COVID but still useful today.

Children & Youth

  • Sun Hats & Wellie Boots have a range of nature inspired and eco-friendly activities for children and young people, including nature trails, crafts, and resource packs.
  • A Rocha have a range of children (ages 4-7 and 7-11) and youth (ages 11-14 and 15-18) resources.
  • Messy Church Volume 4 was recently released, focusing on the 5 Marks of Mission. The theme for September is the 5th Mark- to ‘Treasure’ God’s world.
  • Muddy Church have a selection of resources across seasons, including for Harvest.
