St John’s Churchyard, Waterloo Road, SE1 8TY is a remarkable, award winning (Green Flag and Gold twice in London in Bloom) urban garden in the centre of London. Maintained by participants and volunteers at St John’s Waterloo and its sister-charity The Bridge At Waterloo (TBAW), the garden has a reputation for interesting planting as well as exceptional potential as an urban community space.

We are seeking a Community Gardener to help us keep transforming our vision for the churchyard into reality. They will be responsible for the oversight and implementation of horticultural plans and projects as well undertake key gardening tasks to maintain and improve the green space. The role also involves establishing and carrying out sound horticultural practices in the cultivation of the space, including improving areas for conservation and wildlife, reducing the use of water and pesticides and championing good practice. A significant part of the role involves work with our team of participants and volunteers, some of whom have special needs, and identifying and developing new volunteer projects with local people. The Community Gardener will form part of the Project Delivery team at TBAW.

St John’s and TBAW are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers interacting with these groups to share this commitment. This position will be subject to satisfactory DBS and reference checks. For further information, please see the Job Description here.

To apply: Please send your CV describing and listing tasks of relevant educational, extra-curricular and employment experience with a cover letter (max. 1 side) explaining why you want the role and how your skills and experience match the specification including details of a recent gardening project that demonstrates the skills required for this type of role. Kindly include contact details for two referees. Pass on all these documents to Elaine Wright, Administrator at SJW, at [email protected].
