October marks the start of Black History Month (BHM) in the UK, a time to celebrate and recognise the invaluable contributions and rich history of black communities of African and Caribbean descent. It’s also an opportunity to advocate for racial equality and social justice.

The national theme for Black History Month UK 2026 is ‘Honouring Our Communities’ – inviting us to recognise the communities that shape, support and strengthen Britain. This year’s theme reflects the fact that Black history is not only made through landmark events or by famous names. It is also created through everyday acts of leadership, care, service, creativity, courage and commitment.

On Saturday 3 October – inspired by the national theme, our diocese will be ‘Honouring our Communities & Sharing our Stories’ during a special Eucharistic service and celebration event at Southwark Cathedral. The event in partnership with the Diocesan Board of Education, will feature musical contributions by the Archbishop Tenison’s School Gospel choir, Choir from St Michael’s CofE Primary School and drummers from St Paul’s Church, Brixton. The Address will be given by Joseph Vambe, Church Relations Manager at Christian Aid and Bishop Rosemarie will preside.

In preparation for this year’s celebration event, we invited you to nominate parishes, chaplaincies, school groups and Christian initiatives that you think demonstrate what it means to ‘live life abundantly’ (John 10:10), making a positive difference in the lives of black-led/ black-majority communities across our diocese. There will be an opportunity to honour their work and present Community Honours Awards after the service and share citations of all our shortlisted nominees.

Come for worship, and to learn, listen and celebrate with us!

If you are unable to join us in person, there is a livestream link to join us online and follow the order of service.

Visit our dedicated Black History Month page for information about more special services and events taking place across the diocese. You can also access a range of prayers and resources to help you celebrate and raise awareness about BHM and racial justice in your church or school.
