Dr Michael Tang is the creator of Kairos cards and Programme Coordinator – Parish Development and Renewal Programme for Southwark Diocese and barista at Sacred Ground, Soho. When asked why he became interested in theology and what inspired him to create the cards, Michael said “My unchurched friends challenged me: ‘Theology is where dumped people go.’ That hurt—and ignited something. My mentor reminded me: I don’t just study theology, I practice it in everyday life. I want theology to move beyond lip service. What inspired me to create the cards was watching UK theology enrollment decline while Gen Z increasingly reads the Bible themselves. There’s hunger for spiritual depth, just not in traditional packages. I wanted to create something that makes theology cool—accessible wisdom from diverse theologians and hidden biblical characters that sparks curiosity rather than duty.”
Michael outlined his background and faith journey, saying “I’m a liminal scholar between worlds—pulling espresso shots while completing my PhD in Theology. My career spans music industry work (festival curator, journalist, Artist Relations from indie labels to Warner Music) to serving as PDRP Coordinator for Diocese of Southwark. This isn’t confusion—it’s incarnational ministry in practice. My faith journey is messy and authentic. Three churches have kicked me out. These painful experiences taught me what unchurched and dechurched Christians feel—the disconnect between institutional church and lived faith. That gap became my calling to bridge.”
Michael has a vision for the cards: “To secure funding for Series 2 and scale this into a movement. I envision Kairos Cards making people genuinely excited about biblical study—not through guilt or obligation, but through discovering the richness of theological tradition in bite-sized, beautifully designed moments. Making theology great again, one card at a time.”
