Michael Browne has been appointed as the next Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser for the Diocese of Southwark. He succeeds Pamela Chisholm, who stepped down from the role in October 2025.
With more than 20 years’ experience in the health, social care and voluntary sectors, Michael is passionate about working to improve the lives of those who are most vulnerable, marginalised and socially excluded. Most recently, Michael has worked for more than a decade leading on Safeguarding within Change Grow Live – a charity that helps people who face a range of issues including addiction, justice, housing and employment.
“I’m honoured to take up the role of Head of Safeguarding for the Diocese of Southwark,” he said. “I look forward to working together to ensure our communities remain safe, supported, and empowered.”
Welcoming the appointment, the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, said: “The Safeguarding landscape in the Church of England is rapidly changing and I am delighted that Michael is joining our excellent team at this crucial time. His insights from the charity and social care sector will be invaluable as we continue to work to make our churches and communities safer for all.”
“In Southwark, we’re on a journey of continual review and improvement for all our Safeguarding work,” added Diocesan Secretary Nicola Thomas. “We know that there is always room for learning and growth – and I’m so pleased that Michael will be leading the team as we address these challenges and make the most of the opportunities and resources that are available to us.”
