In partnership with the CHANEL Culture Fund, The National Portrait Gallery is showing a collection of contemporary commissioned art by eight artists who have created works highlighting untold narratives as part of the Artists First: Contemporary Perspectives on Portraiture programme.
The programme includes artists work through a variety of media including installation, textile, painting, collage, drawing and film and coincides with a series of special events with participating artists.
Exploring the importance of community and inspired by the Gallery’s collection of cartes-devisites, Panama-based artist Giana De Dier has created a series of small photomontage portraits for display alongside the historic cartes, highlighting contemporary changemakers from Britain’s African and Caribbean diaspora who are making a difference within their communities today.
One of the works features Bishop Rosemarie (pictured) and is currently on display as part of the collection.
