The Bishop of Leeds announced the sad news of the death of Bishop Colin Buchanan, much loved in Southwark Diocese, where he served as 10th Bishop of Woolwich from 1996 until his retirement in 2004.

Bishop Christopher asks that we give thanks for the life of Bishop Colin and hold his wife Di and family in our prayers.

See the message below from the Bishop of Leeds:

I write to announce the death of Bishop Colin Buchanan on 29 November 2023 in the Leeds General Infirmary. Colin had a heart attack last week, followed by a massive stroke. He died peacefully and with his beloved family around him.

Colin is loved and respected around the world, but especially here in the Diocese of Leeds. Since his retirement as Bishop of Woolwich in 2004, he served in the historic Diocese of Bradford and then Leeds as an Honorary Assistant Bishop. Many parishes and individuals owe him a huge debt for his pastoral care, teaching and faithfulness. He will be greatly missed.

However, the greatest loss will be felt by his immediate family: Di, Stephanie and Judith. We pray for them in the loss of their husband and father and must allow them their space to grieve and mourn. The death of a public figure can be difficult for close family – please be sensitive to this.

Details of Colin’s funeral will be published in due course. For now we thank God for him and commend him to the love and mercy of the God he sought to serve so faithfully. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. May his family be held in the palm of God’s hand.
