This role will provide support to the Chaplaincy Team who provide religious and pastoral care of prisoners and staff within HMP Wandsworth. This role is voluntary and unpaid.

  • Essential skills: an ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English.
  • Hours of work: anticipated to be one day per week, hours to be agreed as mutually convenient.
  • All volunteers are subject to security and identity checks prior to taking up post.

Typical tasks associated with this role include:

  • Actively support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process (the case management approach used within the prison to support people who are at risk of self-harm or suicide)
  • Provide advice, pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners and their families, as requested
  • Be part of the support of provision of available and accessible chaplaincy care
  • Assist the Chaplains to deliver opportunities for worship, study and religious programmes
  • Work collaboratively with other Chaplains on the maintenance and provision of facilities for worship and prayer
  • Consider ways in which local faith communities and other agencies may become involved in mentoring prisoners on release
  • Provide personal support for other volunteers and chaplains
