How to Share your Faith for Clergy and Lay at every level of parish life. Facilitated by the Mission department’s Dean of Revitalisation, we welcome ecumenical mission trainer Revd Terry Quick to lead us in thinking through how to share our faith, and why we might wish to.
Consistently the church surveys I do show the one thing church leaders, members, and attenders want for their church … more people-in-the-pews. Of course we do.
I know the drill. If we just study harder, preach better, pray more, visit the sick more often, hold more hands, more meetings, make better plans, start more ministries we can in time (whew!) ‘loop them in’, maybe. And hopefully one day they’ll come on a Sunday and look, and pray, and just maybe – stay.
All of the above are good and we should do these things; we are in fact reaching and ministering to people through our good hard solid pastoral work. Here’s a thought – what if our people shared the work of reaching people with us as co-laborers in the field? What if they were equipped, confident, and interested in sharing their faith with people in their everyday sphere of influence when the topic comes up in conversation? Wonder what that would look like? This appears to be Jesus’ method. He trained His twelve for three years then insisted at His ascension they go share their faith with the entire world. By all accounts they did a very good job.
Collectively our people interact with far more people over the course of a week than we do on Sundays. What if our people were equipped to answer this one question: “How do I become a Christian, like right here and now?” Weird question, I know. And probably no one would pose that question like the Philippian jailer did to Paul and Silas in Acts 16:30, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”. Paul and Silas gave a fairly straight answer, and before morning the whole family accepted Jesus as Savoir and were baptized. Paul and Silas were ready for the question, and we can help our people to be equipped, confident, and ready as well.
