This session is for anyone – clergy, lay ministers, or carers – who might interact with people with dementia. It will give an overview of dementia as a syndrome (types of dementia, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and red herrings), getting a diagnosis (and why it can be helpful to), what a person’s journey through services might look like, and post-diagnostic support in the community and where to seek help. We’ll also cover communication in dementia and co-occurring symptoms that might make care or relationships difficult in a pastoral ministry setting.
The training will be given by Grant Malyn, Dementia Clinical Nurse Specialist at the South London and Maudsley NHS trust, and supported by SAGE – Southwark and Ageing.
