2026 marks the 500th anniversary of the publication of William Tyndale’s tremendously influential New Testament, which re-shaped the way that English-speaking people read their Bible. 
 
Tyndale was condemned as a heretic by Cardinal Wolsey. His translations were burnt publicly by the Bishop of London. King Henry VIII spent years trying to have Tyndale arrested and executed – finally succeeding in 1536. But why was Tyndale’s work so controversial?
