Position: Senior Curriculum Leader of Mathematics
Location: Croydon, Surrey
Required for: 29th August 2024
Contract: Permanent
Salary: Leadership Scale L8 – L12 (£59,826.00 – £65,629.00)
Closing Date: Monday, 29th January 2024
Interview Date: Wednesday, 7th February 2024

We are looking for an experienced, committed Senior Curriculum Leader of Mathematics for this mixed, comprehensive Croydon Church of England secondary school with a strong and ambitious curriculum vision for both its pupils and its Sixth Form students.

The current Head of Department is retiring from his role after over 20 fruitful years, having led the department to significant success and through adaptation to a different context in recent times. Good foundations are in place. There is a strong team of committed and well qualified teachers of Maths, as the school grows to 150 pupils in each year from Year 7 to Year 11 by 2026. The Sixth Form provision here is also strong and well developed, with both Maths and Further Maths successfully taught at A Level.

The school is on a good trajectory: recent changes to the Senior and Senior Pastoral Leadership Teams have made a good impact on the learning culture in a growing Christian community. The focus now shifts to building the Senior Curriculum Leadership Team required in a larger school for us to achieve significantly better academic progress throughout. This challenge is as pertinent at Key Stage 3 as it is in the Sixth Form.

This role is centred on the dynamic leadership of Maths: strategic oversight of curriculum development, inspiring consistently good teaching and high standards of learning, and managing good resources. This role is designed for someone with proven teaching experience across all key stages, a strong subject knowledge, who can demonstrate excellent leadership skills and is committed to building a cohesive teaching team and high standards of pupil ownership of their learning.

New to the role with this appointment is the whole school dimension – this is why it is on the Leadership Scale. We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced school curriculum leader, who sees Maths as part of the whole, makes the connection with school priorities, has an established track record of achieving high levels of pupil progress, can be an example to other curriculum leaders, is available for some whole school duties, and can help form our new team of Senior Curriculum Leaders to work with the Deputy Headteacher (Christian Character and Academic Purpose) to guide the development of the whole curriculum from Year 7 to Year 13.

In this role you will;

  • Teach from Year 7 to A Level
  • Lead a strong, well-established and motivated Maths team and influence the teaching and professional development of a number of significant colleagues
  • Develop and shape an ambitious and engaging Maths curriculum and provide exciting pathways through Maths for a new generation of Tenison’s pupils
  • Have significant opportunities as a senior member of our Curriculum Leadership Team
  • Be part of a school with strong traditions and wide-ranging extra-curricular activities
  • Develop professionally and personally in a secure, but lively atmosphere
  • Contribute to our pastoral care and our Christian ethos

About Us

Archbishop Tenison’s is an exciting school to work in. This year we are marking the 310th year since our foundation here in Croydon by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Tenison. His vision for a school to provide Ten Poor Boys and Ten Poor Girls with a good academic education in a secure Christian context continues to inspire us to this day. We remain a relatively small secondary school with a strong sense of community and are now the only Church of England secondary school in London’s largest Borough. It is a school with a dynamic curriculum vision to educate the whole person in accordance with the two great commandments of Jesus to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Our staff team is settled, and yet also developing well, as we increase our pupil numbers. Our curriculum is ambitious. Our Sixth Form is small, but working to a high standard and will, we trust, grow significantly over the next few years, as we build up from Year 7. This is one reason why this appointment is so important to us.
