Bishop Christopher pays tribute to the Southwark & London Diocesan Housing Association

On 28 July 2016 a celebration was held at Trinity House, the Southwark Diocesan offices, to mark the achievements of the Southwark and London Diocesan Housing Association (SLDHA) since its creation and the conclusion of its successful merger with AmicusHorizon Limited.
At the celebration, the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chesssun paid tribute to the staff and the history of the SLDHA.
He said: "SLDHA was started under the visionary leadership of the then Archdeacon of Southwark, Douglas Bartles-Smith, and the now Revd Giles Goddard who was its first director. The Association is perhaps unique in diocesan history in demonstrating that a project begin by Southwark can be joined by London and flourish in partnership between the two dioceses.
Twenty years’ ago, the Association showed that churches can offer practical help in the area of social justice, especially in regard to housing. SLDHA’s achievements in providing high quality homes in areas of acute housing need are to be celebrated. Of course times change, and SLDHA is not alone in finding itself too small a player in the housing world. The partnership with Amicus represents the best possible way forward as an Association with not dissimilar origins takes forward the work begun here.
I commend the work of all those involved with SLDHA to you, thanking you all for what has been and welcoming with you that which will soon be."
