The Gospel of Luke gives us a unique portrait of Jesus’s earthly life, from his birth to his ascension. Without him we would not know about the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, or the Road to Emmaus. Christmas wouldn’t be half so exciting without Gabriel’s announcement or the shepherds surprised by the heavenly host – details supplied only by Luke! Luke’s Jesus is a compassionate Saviour who has a special concern for the outcasts of society. This message of love and liberation has inspired countless Christians to put the Gospel into action. Perhaps you are among them? The Revd Esther Foss, vicar of St Andrew’s, Coulsdon, and Dean of Women introduces us to the Gospel from which our readings this coming year will be drawn.
