With your support, together we can build a fruitful future for our Diocesan parishes, communities, and schools.

The Diocese of Southwark is uniquely placed through its 356 places of worship in the 16 local authorities of South London and East Surrey to help change lives and transform society. Our large, diverse Diocese faces rapid population growth, significant areas of poverty and the challenge and opportunities to evangelise and develop mission and ministry for a changing culture.

How could you help resource our vision and mission?

The difference your donations make

We are seeking funds for a variety of exciting projects, spearheaded by our two successful Strategic Development Fund bids, which aim to deliver strategic growth and cultural change in our Diocese.

Through your generosity to the Southwark Vision Development Fund, we have been able to contribute to projects such as:

  • young families work through our Messy Church link-up
  • Fresh Expressions of Church projects reaching out to those who normally never set foot in our churches
  • pioneering and developing ministries in new development communities from the Thames Barrier to Battersea, including the ministry of Betsy Blatchley, Southwark’s first Pioneer Minister in the Arts based in Nine Elms
  • six missional projects funded in part by our successful Strategic Development Fund bid in 2019 including our bilingual church in Elephant and Castle; the planting of a congregation into St Peter, Vauxhall; a new schools and family worker in a growing town on the edge of Gatwick Airport; and establishing an Eco Church in Lambeth.

If you would like more details, or would like to donate to a specific project, please contact us.

Leaving a legacy gift – giving to the next generation of mission

No matter how small or large, gifts in wills create amazing opportunities for mission. A gift in your will to the church is one of the most valuable and lasting ways you can continue to support its mission and ministry within your community.

Once you have made provision for your loved ones, you have the opportunity to make a lasting gift to God, by leaving a legacy to his church.

A gift can be an expression of your gratitude and thanksgiving towards God, and can help to ensure that the Church of England is a living, transforming presence in South London and East Surrey, serving our communities in the 21st century and beyond.

A gift in your will is tax efficient! Legacy gifts are exempt from inheritance tax and could reduce the total amount of tax paid on your estate. From 6 April 2012, if you make a gift in your will to a charity of at least 10% of your net estate, the rate of inheritance tax due on the taxable part of the estate is reduced from 40% to 36%.

For more information on how to make a legacy and writing your will, please see the Church of England legacy website or visit our legacies page.

Donating shares

Did you know that donating shares can be one of the most tax-effective ways to give to charity?

Giving HMRC qualifying shares to charity means you get income tax relief on the value of the shares as well as exemption from capital gains tax. The tax relief applies if you give, or sell at less than market value, any qualifying investments to a UK charity.

Self-assessment tax return

If you complete a self-assessment tax return and are entitled to a tax refund, you can choose to have all or part of the repayment sent directly to a charity of your choice. This is called ‘Self-Assessment Giving’ or ‘SA Donate’.

You can also ask the repayment to be made as a Gift Aid donation.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sends your refund (plus any Gift Aid tax repayment) directly to the charity by electronic transfer.

Every gift to the Development Fund matters for achieving our vision as a Diocese. Thank you for giving generously.

Remembering Gillian Morley

In 2018, the Diocese was delighted to receive a significant legacy of £166,000 from Deacon Gillian Morley.  Gillian previously worked in the parish of St Swithun, Hither Green (1970-1982) and continues to serve the mission of our Diocese in her generosity. This gift in her will provided the foundation stone to open this fund.

Read more about Gillian’s story in our blog post.
