New Mayor of London signs in at Southwark Cathedral
On Saturday 7 May, just hours after his election was confirmed, Sadiq Khan, the new Mayor of London, was sworn in at a ceremony in Southwark Cathedral.
A packed cathedral, including representatives from all the major faiths, watched as the newly elected Mayor signed the official documents to begin his term of office.
The Dean of Southwark, the Very Revd Andrew Nunn, welcomed everyone to the Cathedral saying that “We were delighted when we were asked to host this event as Mayor Sadiq Khan begins his term of office, our first Muslim mayor, something of which we as a Christian community are proud”. He then handed over to Baroness Lawrence who introduced Mr Khan.
Mr Khan opened his speech with the words “I’m Sadiq Khan and I’m the Mayor of London!” He went on to say that when he was growing up on a council estate just a few miles away from the Cathedral, he never dreamt that he could be Mayor of London and that he was determined to be the mayor for all Londoners.
