St Martin-in-the-Fields is a landmark church in Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London.  It is unique in bringing together, a wide-ranging cultural programme, a thriving commercial enterprise and charitable work – all rooted in a vibrant and inclusive congregational life, with 24 services per week.

Throughout our history, St Martin’s has been an innovator and boasts an impressive list of notable achievements and contributions to wider society:  it was the location of the first lending library and of the first religious broadcast. Amnesty International was conceived at St Martin’s, Liberty was founded here and Shelter and the Big Issue were both launched here.  From 2006-8 St Martin’s engaged in a remarkable £36m renewal programme; the church now offers a host of different activities and meeting places. Visitors can take part in daily church services, attend regular concerts and jazz nights, view free art exhibitions and enjoy shopping and meals in the award-winning Café in the Crypt or Café in the Courtyard.

We are looking for a Deputy Head Verger to join our team, to welcome our visitors, to prepare for worship and support the clergy team in events and liturgical life of our church.  The main purpose of the Deputy Head Verger’s role is to enable the worshipping life of St Martin’s to run smoothly, and the building to be a place of welcome for visitors and users throughout the week, ensuring the safety for all who enter the church.

You will need to interact with a wide range of people, with a balanced and knowledgeable approach to the numerous activities taking place across site.

If you are…..

  • Passionate – about creating a welcome and open place 
  • Creative – in finding solutions 
  • Hardworking – who can take the initiative to get things done 
  • Self-starting – excellent at organisation and calm under pressure 
  • Friendly – able to work in a large and varied team 
  • Approachable – the go to person

…. please apply.  This is an ideal opportunity for the right candidate looking to work in a diverse place, and supporting the life of St Martin’s.
